How to get your funeral home to show up in ChatGPT.

Updated September 3, 2026 · 5 minute read

A growing number of families no longer start with a Google search. When someone dies at two in the morning, or when an adult child three states away is quietly trying to help a parent plan ahead, more of them are opening ChatGPT, Gemini, or their phone assistant and typing something like "help me find a funeral home near Marshall, Michigan" or "what do I do to arrange a simple cremation."

Then they act on whatever the assistant tells them. And for most funeral homes, the honest answer is: the assistant does not mention you, or mentions you with stale or missing information. This guide explains why that happens and what you can actually do about it.

Why AI assistants leave most funeral homes out

An AI assistant is not a directory. It does not have a tidy list of every funeral home. It assembles an answer from what it can find and trust in the moment: search results it is allowed to read, business listings, reviews, and structured data that clearly says "this is a funeral home, here is where it is, here is what it offers." When your information is thin, inconsistent, or locked inside a design that machines cannot read, the assistant does the safe thing and leaves you out, or names the one competitor whose details are clear.

Three gaps cause most of it. First, an incomplete or unverified Google Business Profile, which is still one of the strongest signals assistants lean on for local answers. Second, a website that reads beautifully to a person but gives a machine nothing to grab: no clear, structured statement of who you are, where you serve, and what you do. Third, and newest, no way for the assistant to actually do anything with you once it finds you.

What you can do this month

You do not need to become a technologist. A handful of concrete steps move you from invisible to citable.

The part almost no one has yet

Appearing in an answer is good. Being the home a family can actually begin planning with, right there in the conversation, is a different level. A managed connector, sometimes called an MCP server, lets an AI assistant not just mention your home but help a family start: see your services, your prices, your calendar, and take a real first step, all matched to you.

Today, essentially no independent funeral home offers this. That is exactly why it is an opportunity. When yours is the only home in your area an assistant can truly work with, the odds it points a family to you rise sharply. It is the difference between being listed and being chosen.

The honest bottom line

None of this replaces the referrals, the reputation, and the relationships you have built over decades. Families will still find you the way they always have. But a real and growing share are starting somewhere new, and right now that door is mostly closed for funeral homes. The homes that open it first, in each town, will quietly win the families who begin their search in AI.

Kindwillow builds this for independent funeral homes and cremation services: a fully branded app for the families you serve, plus the managed connector that lets AI assistants find you and start a case with you. We bring on one provider per area first. Check whether your territory is still open, or ask us a question.
