Why your Google Business Profile is not enough for AI discovery
Updated September 6, 2026 · 5 minute read
If you run a funeral home or a cremation service, you have probably spent real time on your Google Business Profile. You keep the hours right, you post the occasional update, you reply to reviews. That work matters, and you should keep doing it. But a profile that is doing its job on Google can still leave you invisible in the place a growing number of families now look first: an AI assistant. Here is why, in plain terms, and what actually closes the gap.
What a Business Profile was built to do
A Google Business Profile is a listing. It was designed for one situation: a person types a search, sees a map and a row of results, and clicks the one that looks right. For that job it works well. It gives Google a tidy set of facts, your name, address, phone, hours, category, a few photos and reviews, so your firm can appear on the results page and on the map.
The key word is listing. A profile is a fixed set of fields meant to be read by a person who will then click through to your website or pick up the phone. It was never meant to answer a family's actual question or help them take the next step. It points; it does not explain.
Why an AI assistant needs more than that
When a family opens an assistant like ChatGPT and asks "what do I do when a parent dies" or "how does direct cremation work near me and what does it cost," they are not asking for a map pin. They are asking for an answer. The assistant tries to give one, and to do that it pulls together whatever information it can actually reach and understand.
A listing gives it very little to work with. There is no field on a Business Profile for how you guide a family through the first hours, what is included in a cremation, how pre-planning works with you, or how someone begins arrangements after hours. Even the facts that are there, your hours and services, are shaped for a search results page, not for a tool that is trying to help a person decide and act. So the assistant does the best it can with thin material, and often that means it summarizes the category in general terms, leans on whatever larger sites it can read, or simply does not surface any one firm at all. Being listed on Google does not put you inside that answer.
Discovery has quietly split in two
For years, "being findable" meant one thing: showing up in search. Now there are two separate jobs, and most firms have only done the first.
- Search discovery. A person looks, sees links and a map, and chooses. Your website and your Google Business Profile serve this well, and you should keep both current.
- AI discovery. A person asks an assistant a question and reads the answer it gives. This runs on information the assistant can reach directly and work with, not on a listing built for a results page.
This is the idea behind our phrase, be found in AI, too. It is not about replacing Google, your referrals, or the phone. It is about being present in one more place families already are, so you are discovered by, and included in, the tools they turn to, both at need and when they are planning ahead.
What actually makes you discoverable in AI
The piece a Business Profile cannot provide is a doorway an assistant can understand and work through. That is what a managed connector, an MCP server, does. It lets an assistant safely read the information you have chosen to publish, your hours, locations, services, what you share about pricing, how a family begins, and, where you allow it, take a few simple next steps for the family. Nothing you have not approved is exposed, and the family needs no account and no setup in advance; the connector is discoverable on its own.
In other words, your profile helps a person find a link. A connector lets the assistant help the person directly and point them to you. They do different jobs. Most firms have covered the first and left the second wide open.
Why being the only one in your area matters
We work on a one-home-per-territory basis, exclusively. When yours is the only home an assistant can actually reach and work with in your area, the odds that it features you rise sharply. We will not promise that any assistant always recommends you, because no honest vendor can control what these tools say. What we can say plainly is that an assistant cannot feature a firm it has no way to reach. If the homes around you are invisible to it while you are not, that is a real and lasting advantage, and it is one your Google ranking alone will not give you.
What this means for your to-do list
Nothing you are already doing is wasted. Keep your Google Business Profile accurate, keep answering reviews, keep your website current. Then add the layer that a listing was never built to cover. Kindwillow builds and manages the connector for you as part of your white-label, fully branded app, so there is nothing technical for you to run. You review and approve what is published, and you change it whenever your offerings change. The point is that this works quietly in the background while your team does the work only it can do: caring for families.
If you would like to see whether your area is still open, you can check your territory in under a minute. If you would rather talk it through with a person first, we are glad to do that; just get in touch and we will walk you through it at your pace.
