Should your funeral home be on the app stores?
Updated October 4, 2026 · 4 minute read
Sooner or later, most funeral home and cremation owners ask the same question: do we need to be in the app stores? It is a fair thing to wonder. Families live on their phones, and a branded app in Apple's App Store or Google Play can feel like proof that a business is current and real. The honest answer is that it depends on what you want the app to do, and on who does the work of getting there and keeping you there.
What being on the app stores actually means
Being in the app stores means a family can search for your name, find an app that belongs to your home, and install it with one tap. That is different from a website, which opens in a browser. An app sits on the phone as its own icon, and it can do things a web page cannot, like hold a memorial page close at hand or offer a quiet place to return to. There are two separate stores, Apple's App Store for iPhones and Google Play for Android phones, and each has its own account, its own rules, and its own review before anything goes live.
Why a storefront presence can help
For a funeral home or cremation provider, the value is less about downloads and more about staying present. You serve a family intensely for a week or two, and then, with most businesses, the contact fades. An app changes that. It keeps you a tap away for the people you have already served, through aftercare, through the first difficult anniversaries, and later when they begin pre-planning for themselves. A branded icon on the phone is a quiet, steady reminder that you are still there, without a single phone call.
The part nobody mentions
The listing is the easy part to picture and the hard part to maintain. Each store requires a developer account and an ongoing fee to keep it. Each app goes through a review before it is approved, and reviews can be slow or come back asking for changes. Once you are live, the work does not stop. Phone operating systems update every year, privacy rules change, and an app that is not kept current can stop working or be pulled from the store. For a small home without a developer on staff, that is a real commitment, not a one-time upload.
You do not have to build it yourself
This is where a white-label partner matters. Instead of hiring a developer and opening store accounts in your name, you can have a fully branded app published for you, under your home's name and look, with the accounts, the review process, and the yearly updates handled on your behalf. You get the storefront presence and the icon on the family's phone without taking on the upkeep. The app carries your brand; the work of keeping it alive is someone else's job.
Be found in AI, too
An app store listing is one way families find you. It is no longer the only one. More and more, families begin with an AI assistant, asking it plain questions about arranging a service or planning ahead in their area. If your home can be discovered and included there, through a managed MCP server, then you show up in the place families are already looking, alongside your phone, your website, and your app. Being on the app stores and being found in AI are two halves of the same shelf: both are about being present where a family happens to start.
Questions to ask before you decide
Before you say yes to anyone, ask a few plain questions. Who owns the developer accounts and the app itself, you or the vendor? Who handles the store reviews and the yearly updates? What happens to your family relationships and the information in the app if you ever leave? And most important, is the app genuinely useful to families, with memorial pages, aftercare, and pre-planning, or is it just a brochure with your logo on it? A useful app earns its place on the phone. A brochure gets deleted.
So, should your funeral home be on the app stores? If the app does real work for the families you serve, and if the building and upkeep are handled for you, then a branded presence in the stores is worth having. If it is only there to look modern, it is not. If you want to see whether this is open in your area, you can check your territory, or get in touch and we will talk it through.
